Sheila Alexander-Reid & Women In The Life magazine
Sheila Alexander-Reid, also known as S.A Reid, was the president and founder of the Women In The Life Organization. What started as just a party organization turned into a monthly magazine spanning from 1993 to 2022. From a monthly magazine to what is now a social justice organization that focuses on the advancement of rights for Black lesbians and queer women of color through cultural affirmation, education and advocacy in the Washington DC area.
She was the Director of the Mayors Office for LGBTQ Affairs in DC. During this time she was responsible for finding housing for homeless LGBTQ youth, training government employees in LGBTQ competency and creating alternative employment opportunities for sex workers and trans women.
Prior to becoming the Director Sheila was the Director of Strategic Initiative at the Washington Blade, a coveted newspaper covering the latest LGBTQ news in the DC area. Among several other positions, she was the founder of Inside Out, DC’s only FM, LGBTQ radio show.
Sheila is an incredible source of love and support for the queer community in DC and beyond. She is a living icon.
