Loving Her, Say Jesus Come to Me & The White and Black of It

Ann Allen Shockley is a lesbian author, archivist and librarian notably known for her non fiction stories about interracial lesbian couples and essays on the plight of Black lesbians living in a world riddled with misogyny, homophobia and racism.

She was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1927, where she later began her journey as an editor for her school newspaper during her undergraduate studies at Fisk university. After getting her degree, she went on to receive her masters in library science.

After working at various universities she returned to Fisk where she served as a professor of library science, university archivist, as well as an associate librarian for special collections. She also founded the Black Oral History Program before she later retired in 1988.
